A variety of cardiac tests are available. The most important question is which ones you will need to identify the answers to your symptoms. The value of tests is usually related to its effectiveness to identify the problem, the costs and inconvenience involved. The tests should also be matched to your risk profile.
CONSULTATION
This happens to be the most important part of your care. 80-90% of your concerns will be addressed at this juncture. Dr Ng enjoys this segment of your care the most. This is consistent with his objective to involve you to understand your own condition in a better way. It is also the way he endeavors to share knowledge with his students at the University.
EVALUATION OF CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
​Astute patients will enquire why there are so many tests just to check for ‘blockages’ of the heart. Symptoms are not always reliable. While risks vary with many factors, generally gender and age are strong predictive factors. Tests like electrocardiogram (ECG), exercise treadmill test (ETT), stress echocardiography (stress echo) have incremental benefit to check or coronary artery disease and are available at the clinic. Additional tests such as CT Coronary Angiography and coronary calcium score tests are available at onsite facilities.
Various reliable laboratory tests are available to indicate your risk profile to guide you on lifestyle optimization.
EVALUATION OF PALPITATIONS OR GIDDINESS
​The evaluation of palpitations requires a visualization of the abnormal heart beat (arrhythmia). Usually a Holter device is used in addition to a structural check of the heart through and echocardiogram (Echo).
INVASIVE CARDIAC TESTS
​These include cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, coronary artery stenting, etc. Dr Ng will be able to provide a holistic guide to these various tests.
Cardiac testing is not similar to ordering ramen from a vending machine.
